A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO MR. DEEPAL S. ELIATAMBY, P.E., FOR HIS CONTINUED
SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY AND THE STATE THROUGH HIS EXPERTISE IN
CIVIL ENGINEERING AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN
HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, it is with great pleasure that we recognize South Carolinians
who are dedicated to giving their time and energy to helping build
a sense of togetherness and support among the people of their
communities; and
Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize the great achievements
of the people who serve on boards and commissions to ensure the
ongoing development of the Palmetto State; and
Whereas, Mr. Deepal S. Eliatamby, originally of Sri Lanka, came
to Columbia in 1984 to attend the University of South Carolina,
and he graduated with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering
in 1988; and
Whereas, after earning his master's degree in civil engineering
in 1989, Mr. Eliatamby was offered a job with B.P. Barber and
Associates, a civil engineering firm in Columbia, founded in 1916,
where he was given the opportunity to travel statewide and meet
directly with clients and prospects; and
Whereas, Mr. Eliatamby brought in numerous public and private-sector
clients for the firm and moved rapidly up the ladder to become
a vice president and principal at B.P. Barber and Associates at
the young age of thirty-seven; and
Whereas, through his work on projects throughout South Carolina,
Mr. Eliatamby has won many prestigious awards including the 2003
Outstanding Young Alumnus from the USC College of Engineering
and Information Technology, the 2001 Distinguished Community and
Rural Development Award at the Governor's Rural Summit, and the
1999 Edmund Friedman Young Engineer National Award for Professional
Achievement from the American Society of Civil Engineers; and
Whereas, although Mr. Eliatamby has made significant contributions
through his work, he has also dedicated much of his time to the
Columbia community by mentoring University of South Carolina engineering
students, funding academic scholarships for the University, and
serving on the University's Board of Governors and Alumni Association;
and
Whereas, in addition to his involvement with multiple boards
at the University of South Carolina, Mr. Eliatamby also serves
the midlands community by volunteering his time with the Math
Counts Program and the annual Education Television telethon; and
Whereas, Mr. Eliatamby has developed planning projects for Anderson
County, Williamsburg County, Orangeburg County, as well as the
cities of Bennettsville, Columbia, and Spartanburg; and he has
served on the Business Advisory Council of the South Carolina
Department of Vocational Rehabilitation; and
Whereas, the enthusiasm of Mr. Deepal Eliatamby is unmatched
and his passion for the community and his profession are the traits
of a leader that are not often seen in the average person; and
Whereas, the State of South Carolina considers itself more than
fortunate to have such a dedicated and brilliant man as Mr. Deepal
Eliatamby, and the Palmetto State feels great pride and honor
in calling Mr. Eliatamby one of its own. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by
this resolution, extends its appreciation to Mr. Deepal S. Eliatamby,
P.E., for his continued service to his community and the State
through his expertise in civil engineering and to wish him much
success and happiness in his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented
to Mr. Deepal S. Eliatamby.
